In the world there are many options for private schools, each school offers different study programs so you can provide your children with the education that best suits their needs. Many times the terms used are misinterpreted or confused … Many other times different denominations are used for the same program in different parts of the world. In order to clarify this confusion a bit, we want to share the Glossary of Terms for GRacademic Private Schools that will help guide you on the key programs that our international schools around the world can find.

 

  • A-level (Educational program for young people between 16 and 18 years that lasts 2 years and allows direct entry to many university institutions around the world)
  • Advanced Placement AP (Program offered in American schools that allows taking college credits).
  • Boarding School (Private school that offers education, lodging in student residence and meals where the student lives with his classmates and teachers during the school period).
  • British International School (Schools with British curriculum located outside English territory for students between 3 and 18 years of age)
  • Elementary School: North American term used to describe the education of students from grade 1 to grade 6 whose ages are between 6 and 12 years old).
  • Baccalaureate: This program is offered for students between 5 and 18 years old that classifies education in 3 major stages according to age (Primary between 5 and 11 years old, Medium between 11 and 16 years old and Diploma for students between 16 and 18 years old ) that upon graduation allows them to enter universities in France and in many other places in the world.
  • GCSE’s General Certificate of Secondary Education: Qualifications within the British Study System for youth between 14 and 16 years old. It also offers the international version that is offered in many schools worldwide and has the same validity.
  • High School: North American term used to describe the education of students from grade 9 to grade 12 whose ages are between 14 and 18 years).
  • International Baccalaureate: Generally known as the IB Program. This program is offered for students between 5 and 18 years old that classifies education in 3 major stages according to age (Primary between 5 and 11 years old, Average between 11 and 16 years old and Diploma for students between 16 and 18 years old) upon graduating, it allows them to enter universities in France and in many other places around the world.
  • IB Diploma Program: The IB Diploma Program is offered for students between 16 and 18 years of age that requires a study of the last 2 years of the curriculum offered by the IB program that allows entry to universities in France and many other places in the world.
  • International school: These are all those institutions that offer and promote an international education.
  • Kindergarten: Name that receives first level education in different parts of the world for children under 5 years old.
  • Middle School: North American term used to describe the education of students from grade 6 to grade 8 whose ages are between 11 and 14 years old).
  • Primary education: A term used in England to refer to the first years of a child’s formal education, usually between the ages of 5 and 11 years.
  • SAT Program (US): Study program that takes place in North American schools and that prepares students to take the SAT standard test (Scholastic Assessment Test) that measures high school students in the mathematical area. verbal and analytical Many times this test is a requirement for university admission.
  • SATS Program (UK): Study program that takes place in British schools and measures students between 6 and 11 years of age to know their progress with respect to the national English curriculum.
  • Secondary education: Term used in England to refer to the formal education of a student generally between the ages of 11 and 18 years.
  • Swiss Maturité: This program includes 13 subjects and is studied by young people between 15 and 18 years old that allows entry to universities in France and many other places in the world.
